Dr. David F. Chang is a cataract and refractive surgeon at Altos Eye Physicians in Los Altos, California, and a clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco. He is a past president of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS).
Dr. Chang is one of the most cited teachers of modern cataract technique. Together with Dr. John Campbell he first described intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS), a surgical complication linked to certain prostate medications, and his work changed how surgeons screen patients and plan surgery. He has written widely used textbooks on the phaco chop technique and on managing difficult cataract cases.
He has led international efforts on surgical safety and on expanding access to cataract surgery in low-resource countries. In practice, he cares for patients with routine and complex cataracts, lens implant decisions and astigmatism.
