Dr. Federico G. Velez is a health sciences clinical professor of ophthalmology at the UCLA Stein Eye Institute, where he holds the Leonard Apt Endowed Chair in Pediatric Ophthalmology. He also worked in the pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus division at Duke Eye Center from 2018.
He earned his medical degree at the Pontifical Bolivarian University in Colombia, trained in ophthalmology at the Industrial University of Santander and completed a pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus fellowship at the Jules Stein Eye Institute. He has developed surgical techniques for complex strabismus, including paralytic and traumatic strabismus and strabismus from thyroid eye disease, and studies anterior segment ischemia and pediatric lens disorders. He served on the American Academy of Ophthalmology panel that wrote the Adult Strabismus Preferred Practice Pattern.
