Overview
Professor Gus Gazzard is a consultant glaucoma surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and a professor of ophthalmology at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.
He is best known as Chief Investigator of the LiGHT trial (Laser in Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension). The study showed that selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), a quick outpatient laser, works as well as or better than eye drops as a first treatment for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension, and it changed guidance in the UK and around the world. He continues to lead research on laser treatment, glaucoma surgery and glaucoma care pathways.
Patients see Professor Gazzard for newly diagnosed glaucoma, raised eye pressure, glaucoma that is not controlled on drops, and glaucoma surgery including trabeculectomy and newer drainage operations.
