Overview
Professor James Bainbridge is a consultant vitreoretinal surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital and professor of retinal studies at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.
He led the team that carried out the first gene therapy trial for an inherited retinal disease, treating patients with Leber congenital amaurosis caused by RPE65 gene mutations at Moorfields in 2007, with results published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2008. This work helped establish gene therapy as a treatment approach for inherited blindness, and he continues to lead research on gene and cell therapies for retinal disease.
In clinic he treats retinal detachment, macular holes, diabetic eye disease and other conditions that need vitreoretinal surgery, and sees patients with inherited retinal disease.
