Prof. Martin S. Zinkernagel is Director and Chief Physician of the University Clinic for Ophthalmology at Inselspital, University Hospital Bern, and full professor at the University of Bern. He took over sole leadership of the clinic in 2023 after sharing it with Prof. Sebastian Wolf, and also directs the Bern Photographic Reading Center.

He has led the clinic’s outpatient department since 2013. His research covers inflammation in retinal disease, new retinal imaging methods and the role of the microbiome in eye disease, and he has extensive surgical experience in both the front and back of the eye.

Patients are referred to Prof. Zinkernagel for retinal and macular disease, uveitis-related retinal problems and complex eye surgery.
