Glaucoma Management

Overview

Dr. Meagan Avila earned a bachelor’s degree in biology at Belhaven University and Elmhurst College, then her Doctor of Optometry at The Ohio State University College of Optometry in 2008. She is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Indiana Optometric Association, and was named Ossip Optometry’s Doctor of the Year in 2017. She practises at the Carmel office on Grand Boulevard.

Two areas stand out in her clinical work. Glaucoma is the one patients notice least and she watches most closely, because it takes sight silently and is managed by numbers: pressures, optic nerve scans and visual fields repeated on schedule so a slow change shows up as a trend. Specialty contact lenses are the other, for eyes that standard soft lenses cannot correct or will not stay comfortable on, including irregular corneas and high prescriptions.

She went into the profession because she wanted to help people and knew she wanted medicine of some kind, and optometry fitted. What she enjoys most is being able to change someone’s life by helping them see better, and the long relationships that follow, which is why so much of her list is families she has seen for over a decade.

Outside work, volleyball is the constant. She played in college and in optometry school, and now spends her time with her two children and at their soccer games. She and her husband travel whenever they can, usually somewhere they can hike and be outdoors, and their favourite trip so far has been Banff, Canada.

Questions Patients Ask

How do I book an eye exam with Dr. Avila?

Call the Carmel office in Carmel, Indiana on 317-575-1133 to book an eye exam or a contact lens appointment. Ask for the first available slot with Dr. Avila by name, say whether the visit is a routine exam, a contact lens fitting or an eye problem, and have your vision or medical plan details to hand so cover can be checked before you arrive.

What should I bring to my first visit with Dr. Avila?

Bring photo ID and your vision and medical insurance cards, your current glasses and the boxes or prescription for your contact lenses, a list of every medicine and eye drop you use, and any previous eye records or retinal scans. Mention diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disease or a family history of glaucoma, because these change what gets examined.
